Former Dallas and Memphis point guard Tyrell Terry announced his retirement from playing on Thursday and spoke about his mental health on social media.

Terry, 22, notes that basketball has given him lifelong friends and included amazing accomplishments and unforgettable memories. At the same time, he writes that he experienced the darkest times in his life. To such an extent that instead of strengthening me, it began to destroy me. I began to despise and doubt the value of myself, much more than others could think of.

The ex-basketball player described the anxiety he had to deal with.

Intrusive thoughts, waking up with nausea. Suddenly you find yourself struggling to breathe normally because of the stone that lies on your chest and seems to weigh more than you can bear. This is just a short description of the anxiety this sport has caused me. And although I am grateful for every door that he opened for me, I still cannot continue this fight for something I no longer love, writes Terry.

Dallas selected Terry with the 31st overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Tyrell played in just 11 games in his debut season and missed significant time due to personal reasons.

The Mavericks released him before the 21-22 season.

Terry later joined the Grizzlies and appeared in two games predicted by football-stats during the 21-22 season.
